Boron incorporation in the foraminifer Amphistegina lessonii under a de- coupled carbonate chemistry

چکیده

A number of studies have shown that the boron isotopic composition (δB) and the B /Ca ratio of biogenic carbonates (mostly foraminifers) can serve as proxies for two parameters of the ocean’s carbonate chemistry, rendering it possible to calculate the entire carbonate system. However, the B incorporation mechanism into marine carbonates is still not fully understood and analyses of field samples show species-specific and hydrographic effects on the B proxies complicating their application. Identifying the carbonate system parameter influencing boron incorporation is difficult due to the co-variation of pH, CO 3 and B(OH)−4 . To shed light on the question which parameter of the carbonate system is related to the boron incorporation, we performed culture experiments with the benthic symbiont-bearing foraminifer Amphistegina lessonii using a decoupled pH–CO 3 chemistry. The determination of the δB and B /Ca ratios was performed simultaneously by means of a new in situ technique combining optical emission spectroscopy and laser ablation MC-ICP-MS. The boron isotopic composition in the tests gets heavier with increasing pH and B /Ca increases with increasing B(OH)−4 /HCO − 3 of the culture media. The latter indicates that boron uptake of A. lessonii features a competition between B(OH)−4 and HCO − 3 . Furthermore, the simultaneous determination of B /Ca and δB on single specimens allows for assessing the relative variability of these parameters. Among different treatments the B /Ca shows an increasing variability with increasing boron concentration in the test whereas the variability in the isotope distribution is constant.

Ba incorporation in benthic foraminifera

Barium (Ba) incorporated in the calcite of many foraminiferal species is proportional to the concentration of Ba in seawater. Since the open ocean concentration of Ba closely follows seawater alkalinity, foraminiferal Ba /Ca can be used to reconstruct the latter. Alternatively, Ba /Ca from foraminiferal shells can also be used to reconstruct salinity in coastal settings in which seawater Ba con...

Environmental controls on B/Ca in calcite tests of the tropical planktic foraminifer species Globigerinoides ruber and Globigerinoides sacculifer

The ratio of boron to calcium (B/Ca) in the calcite tests of planktic foraminifers may serve as a proxy for past seawater chemistry, but controls on B incorporation are not yet certain. Here we present the results of laboratory culture experiments with live specimens of Globigerinoides ruber (pink) and Globigerinoides sacculifer, which provide new insight into B incorporation controls. We find ...

Ocean acidification induces biochemical and morphological changes in the calcification process of large benthic foraminifera.

Large benthic foraminifera are significant contributors to sediment formation on coral reefs, yet they are vulnerable to ocean acidification. Here, we assessed the biochemical and morphological impacts of acidification on the calcification of Amphistegina lessonii and Marginopora vertebralis exposed to different pH conditions. We measured growth rates (surface area and buoyant weight) and Ca-AT...

A diffusion-reaction model of carbon isotope fractionation in foraminifera

Fossil foraminiferal shells are utilized in paleoceanography to extract information about environmental conditions of the past ocean. Based on several assumptions, the ratio of C and C preserved in their shells is used to reconstruct, for example, the paleoproductivity or the oceanic pCO . Metabolism of the living organism and the sea water chemistry, 2 however, can influence the incorporation ...
